Paper Mache Art

Paper mache is the craft of using strips of paper or fabric and glue to create other objects. Once dried, the glue creates a hard exterior that can then be painted or decorated as you see fit.

Paper mache is said to have originated in China where it was used to create helmets for soldiers and durable household items.Papier-mâché is an alternate name that is derived from the French for ‘chewed up paper’. We won’t be chewing anything!

A very tactile craft, paper mache incorporates repetitive moments requiring focus and using your sense of touch to determine the length of strips of paper, how soggy the paper must be with the glue before you apply it, and then finally in placing and smoothing the gluey strip in place as you build or create.

As a craft it takes patience as you work out the form you need to create as a base, before you begin applying the paper mache strips. Then, there is the process of layering, three or more layers in most cases dependent on what you are making and how durable you want it. Then comes the drying time.

Once it has dried, your item can be decorated as you want using a variety of different mediums such as paint, fabric, sand, beads, etc. Paper mache is a slow, immersive and creative experience that is perfect for adults and children.

From plates and bowls, to masks, statuettes, jewellery and decorations, paper mache is extremely versatile and limited only by your imagination.
